So I am mistaken in thinking a Catholic may not acede? Where did I get
that idea then (seriously).
From the Bill of Rights (1689)--"all and every person and persons that
is, are or shall be reconciled to or shall hold communion with the See
or Church of Rome, or shall profess the popish religion, or shall
marry a papist, shall be excluded and be for ever incapable to
inherit, possess, or enjoy the crown and government of this realm and
Ireland and the dominions thereunto belonging or any part of the same,
or to have, use, or exercise any regal power, authority or
jurisdiction within the same"--reiterated by the Act of Settlement
1701--the law that you proposed at the beginning of this thread to
amend.

Do you think that merely reducing the requirment to one that the
sovereign be "in communion" with the Church of England ( a seemingly
reasonable requirement of its Head) is inconsistent with the sovereign
being a Roman Catholic? Do you see a fairly simple (virtually
administrative) way of dealing with this (via some sort of papal
dispensation, perhaps? I'm sure the Jesuits could come up with
something ...)
