The ecclesiastical territories were mostly secularized by the Empire,
however.
At least in theory, the secularized ecclesiastical territories were
used to compensate imperial magnates whose original lands had been
annexed by France. But at the Congress of Vienna, much of this land
was given to Prussia, in order to prevent further French aggression
against Germany, an aim that was successfully achieved.
Of course, the individual fate of each prince and parcel of land was
tortuously complicated during this period, as a few examples will
illustrate:
The Bishopric of Fulda was secularized in 1802 and given to the Prince
of Orange-Nassau, later passing to the Kingdom of Westphalia (1806),
the Electorate of Hesse-Cassel (1816), and ultimately going to Prussia
(1867). Prince-Bishop Adalbert III had died in 1814, so it was too
late for the Congress to reinstate him, and Orange-Nassau had been
given the Netherlands.
Last reigning Prince-Bishop of Osnabruck was Frederick, Duke of York &
Albany, second son of George III, King of Britain and Elector of
Hanover. The Bishophric was annexed to Hanover in 1802, and, after
passing through Westphalia and France, was returned to Hanover by the
Congress.
Salzburg was converted into a Duchy and then upgraded to an Electorate
and given to the deposed Grand Duke of Tuscany (1802). Salzburg then
passed to Bavaria (1810) and Austria (1816). The Grand Duke was given
Würzburg instead (1805), until the Treaty of Paris restored him to
Tuscany (1814). Würzburg had been allocated to Bavaria in 1802 and was
returned to Bavaria. The last Duke Bishop of Würzburg had died in
1808, and the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg in 1812, so neither of
them could be restored.
