When Elizabeth acceded, the Archbishop of Canterbury had died a few
hours after Mary, and the post was not refilled in two months before
coronation. Archbishop of York, as Chancellor, proclaimed Elizabeth
and offered to crown her, but could not agree on form of coronation,
and wilfully refused to crown her. Eventually a minor bishop, that of
Carlisle, crowned Elizabeth, openly bickering with her about the form
but nevertheless completing the service.
What about Mary? Archbishop of Canterbury was under arrest for treason
and never released, but till late 1555, he was not even removed from
the seat of Canterbury. As for archbishop of York, do not know what he
did about Jane, but he was married. So who was available to crown Mary?
Stephen Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester & Lord Chancellor did the honors
after she released him from The Tower and promoted him to said positions.
