own.

families etc???

Of course one has to wonder how he classifies jews as it is a religion and

And Einstein himself genetically was probably half German.

Controversial political scientist Charles Murray says Jews have become
disproportionately intelligent due to natural selection during
centuries of exile.

The argument over nature versus nurture - do your genes or your
upbringing determine your intelligence - has been raging since the
Victorian era, but it never gets more angry than when the question of
race is involved.

In the 1970s and 80s, professors Arthur Jensen and HJ Eysenck, were
the target of angry campus protests in Britain, America and Australia
almost every time they lectured because their research implied African
people in particular had lower IQs than other races.

Professor Murray and experimental psychologist Richard Herrnstein
caused the argument to flare again in the 90s with their book, The
Bell Curve, which used different analyses and arguments but also
suggested that IQ could be inherited with the colour of your skin.

Professor Murray is in Australia at the invitation of the Centre for
Independent Studies. He talks to ABC Radio's PM host, Mark Colvin,
about the connection between genes and IQ.

"I don't set out to talk about differences in groups," he said. "The
differences in groups emerge from talking about the profiles of human
accomplishment."

But what convinces you that what's happening in what is measured by
the statistics is caused by genetics, rather than by environment?

"Well, in fact, in all of my published material regarding The Bell
Curve and IQ, we were very careful ... to say that the nature-nurture
debate is pretty artificial in this sense. If you're talking about IQ,
nobody denies that environment plays a very important role.

"People have the wrong-headed idea that if differences between groups
are genetic, that's bad news because we can't do a thing about that,
whereas if the differences between groups are environmental, that's
okay because we can fix the environments and reduce the differences.
What *** and I said in The Bell Curve was that's wrong - we do not
know how to manipulate the environment to get rid of group
differences, so it's the existence of group differences which should
occupy our attention, not whether they are genetic or environmental."

But haven't you argued recently, for instance, that Jews have become
more intelligent by a process of selection? That's a genetic argument.

"Yes ... you're exactly right. When I did the article on Jews and
their disproportionate accomplishment relative to their numbers in the
arts and sciences, I come down explicitly and say it looks to me like
this is going to be genetic. In the case of Jews - Ashkenazi Jews in
particular, but Jews in general in a larger sense - I'm much more
comfortable saying there is no good environmental explanation for the
difference."

Not even that Jewish culture has always been very focused on
accomplishment and educational accomplishment?

"That's of course the first explanation, that Jews value education,
and in the course of spelling out the argument, I say, 'Look, what
kind of culture is going to

A standard deviation is a pretty significant difference. IIRC, Murray
and Hernnstein adduced evidence in The Bell Curve that on average Jews
were about half a standard deviation above occidentals in IQ,
Orientals were slightly above, and African blacks were about a
standard deviation below although it was hard to generalize for blacks
as a group. Murray and Herrnstein also argued that these differences
were innate and that pretty much everyone in the relevant sciences
acknowledge this it though very few wanted to talk about it publicly.

Is the real question not how to create a fair and equitable society
where racial differences DO exist?

Bill I was not going to reply to you this way, as I thought silence
was the better part of valour, however as you have posted your promise
for a second (third ?) time, I feel that I must point out to you that
my email has been forged on numerous occasions via usenet. My various
usernames have also been forged on numerous occasions over the past
five to six months. I am not alone in this. You will know that Susan
Cohen has also suffered from the same fate. There are others. I do
believe, in fact have evidence that the poster who regularly uses the
names Ben Cramer; Binjamin Cramer, The Rebberand uses my email to
throw his mud across usenet. I have no idea how he/she manages to do
it but he.she does. When I trawl through my own archives I come across
many many examples of "my" posts in fact not being mine at all. As you
will appreciate this somewhat blurs the issue. If you don't believe me
please check.

The recent splurge of sporging across usenet is also based on poster's
identities being forged. Look at today's postings. I came across at
least 5 or so of mine the other day posted to a range of ngs I have
not even looked at let alone posted to in the past.
