Prinzep was already dying of consumption when he agreed to take part
in this despicable act.

I wonder, if 'the shot heard around the world' had not suceeded -
would Europe today be any different? Both Archduke Franz Ferdinand and
The Blessed Karl the later Emperor had more liberal views towards the
Empire. The latter envisaged a federation of states - even containing
republics. Maybe that federation would have morphed into something
similar to the current European Union - with perhaps the capital in
Vienna rather than Strassbourg?
