Given the superordinate importance of the matter, why did she not
marry?

Oh, I have never found answers (or purported ones) in short supply in
this group!
As to the Queen in question, I rather thought that the reference to
the "superordinate importance of the matter" in conjunction with my
capitalized variation on The Virgin Queen made my reference to
Elizabeth I fairly clear. I am doubtful that the production of an an
heir by Marie-Adelaide of Luxembourg was a matter of the foremost
gravity (aside from the fact that, iirc, Luxembourg, being a grand
duchy, never in any case HAD a Queen). But there may well be other
cases comparable to that of Elizabeth I (upon whom the continuation of
the tenous Tudor claim to the English throne - and quite possibly the
peace of the realm - depended) and perhaps the reasons for the
abstinence of of those other queens will shed some light on those of
Elizabeth, in whom I am especially (but not exclusively) interested.
Thanks for the replies so far.
The somewhat unclear reference at least gave a nice opportunity for
discussions and information exchange on several royal women! Yes, I guessed
that you were talking about Queen Elizabeth I, but when one decides on a
subject title, one could perhaps think a little bit about defining what
country or house the person in question belongs to, so that people
immediately can know who you are talking about...
