Today I can access Leo's Genealogics, where one finds enumerated 18
children, 13 grandchildren and 34 greatgrandchildren of Charlemagne. By
these figures one arrives at an estimate of something in the
neighborhood of 1,138,501,878 descendants living today. As noted, this
does not take into account cousin marriages, illegitimates whose
ancestry is not likely to be traceable, nor does it include genetic
bottlenecks like the Black Plague. But the original point, that
Charlemagne's descendants today probably number in the hundreds of
millions, stands. Of course, as some one once pointed out, we are also
quite likely to be descended from his stable boy as well.
