Assuming that your map is reasonably detailed, would it be possible for
you to send me a copy?
It isn't *very* detailed, but it comes from "Europe Since 1815" by
C.D.Hazen which was published in the days (1909, revised edition 1923)
when works of history included decent maps as a matter of course.
Don't get me started on the poor quality of historical maps! Obviously
they are very costly to produce, but it staggers me as to the pointless
nature of many of them. If they're not going to be both accurate and
informative, then why bother in the first place?! And that's without
considering how ugly so many of them are...
I consider myself lucky to own a copy of "The New Cambridge Modern
History Atlas", which while not perfect is pretty darned good for quite
a general work. However, it's no match for the quality of the maps
being produced in Germany in the late nineteenth century. Although
modern research and technology allow for even better maps, they're just
not around in any number. Admittedly the "German school" was heavily
based on the notion of the nation-state and the political formation and
changing boundaries thereof, but it would at least form a sound basis
for other map topics.

I have a notion of producing an online historical atlas myself, which
is possibly a completely insane idea; but, as mentioned in the above
article, there is a rather disturbing trend for even so-called
historical atlases to relegate actual mapping to a fairly minor role,
so it doesn't look like the traditional sources for this sort of thing
are going to get the job done any time soon.
In the interim, I'm working on putting on the www a couple of
interesting atlases that date from just before the First World War and
the 1930s, respectively.
I've
been seriously thinking of putting the whole book on my website; it is
probably out of copyright.
It appears to have been originally published in the United States in
1910 or so, and thus would indeed be out of copyright; that's assuming
that a British edition (if that's what you have) doesn't differ from
the US edition!
However, both that and sending you the
maps, which I would be happy to do, will depend on getting my scanner
to work with my new computer, and I won't be able to attempt that
immediately, since I'm going away tomorrow for a week. Feel free to
remind me if you haven't heard from me by the end of May.
Thank you!
I did find a downloadable version of the book that's been made from
scanned images of a proper copy, but after waiting for the massive .pdf
to download I've found to my disgust that whoever prepared the file has
screwed it up completely! The image quality is very poor, and the
bottom seems to have been chopped off all the pages! The .djvu version
is of a much better quality, but the pages are still chopped off.
Whatever happened to people checking their work? Oh well...
