And Jean, the politics of one Pope dispensing the dispensation of an
earlier pope would have been disastrous. One thing that has not been
mentioned is Clement sent Cardinal Campeggio to England to straighten
out the "King's Great Matter." The Cardinal brought with him a Papal
Bull allowing not an annulment, as Henry wanted, but a divorce for
reasons of State. Katherine would have none of it. She wanted her
husband, her position and her daughter as Queen and nothing else would
do.
One question, weren't there any York's left? If there were, Henry
could have married Mary to one of them and further cemented the union
of Lancaster and York. It would have really strengthened the Tudor
claim.
