Really? The Germans have experienced two revolutions since becoming a
republic, a vile dictatorship and their economy is a mess. The French have had
18 constitutions and their economy is a mess, with no prospect of a solution
in sight. The great virtues and achievements of France are ancient ones that owe
nothing whatsoever to recent history. The greatest Frenchman of the
last century (in the political field), Charles De Gaulle, came to prominence
by denying the authority of the state (in 1940) and then overthrowing the
existing republican system (in 1958). The Finns actually chose a monarchy in
1917, but having selected a German decided that a Republic was a bad idea;
they bravely fought off the Soviets in WWII but had to compromise with the
Germans to do so. Today Finland has the highest crime rate in the industrial
world and one of highest murder rates (per capita); what does this say about
Finland?

Suely what has separated the majority of European monarchies from the majority
of European republics in the last century has been political stability,
democracy and the rule of law - which have been notably absent from the majority
of European republican states for substantial periods.
