Ugh, fingerprint readers. They don't seem to like me much, and the
feeling is mutual.

${COLOPROVIDER}'s ones suddenly decided earlier this year that my
fingerprint is not valid. To the point that when I went to their office
to have the print recorded again, it wouldn't even scan; the software
hung trying, multiple times. Several techs stood behind me, scratching
their heads trying to figure out the problem.

It eventually did work, with much coaxing, hand-washing (not dirty to
begin with), "are your fingers cold?" (no), and "hold your finger just
so". But the bloody scanner at the colo still wouldn't let me in with
less than many dozens of tries.

No, I don't do anything to wear my fingerprints down, and they looked
fine to the human operator once they eventually got them recorded.

Further, I'm the only one on our IT staff who seems to get this problem.
I suppose there must be something about my prints the coprogrammers of
the system failed to think of.

But hey, biometric readers keep the facility really secure! Won't even
let some of the legit users in.
