mud server: puddle
user machine: herd
my desktop: guild
etc.

modem server: bank
sun "workstation": nova

There was also a machine named "hand" but I don't recall what it did.

And there were some exceptions to the theme, such as:
The Workstation That Kept Getting Resurrected: lazarus
Auxiliary servers (not always there): *.mirage
uucp hosts: *.bag

(Although I suppose that last works as "bag of tricks".)
