My naming convention was "terms of venery", or more generally, "words
that could plausibly be the correct term for the plural". You know,
like "gaggle of geese", "herd of buffalo", "knot of frogs", "business of
flies", etcetera.

So...
mud server: puddle
user machine: herd
my desktop: guild
etc.

modem server: bank
sun "workstation": nova

There was also a machine named "hand" but I don't recall what it did.

And there were some exceptions to the theme, such as:
The Workstation That Kept Getting Resurrected: lazarus
Auxiliary servers (not always there): *.mirage
uucp hosts: *.bag

(Although I suppose that last works as "bag of tricks".)
