I went to Spain on a bus with that exact malfunction once. The driver
complained that it drove funny, opened up a hood the size of a garage
door somewhere, and tried to fix it using ladies' underwear, finding
that it was too close to the engine and too hot to stay fixed. So he
just drove it the other two thousand kilometres like that. He didn't
seem particularly impressed, saying that, well, you had to be a _little_
careful, but it wasn't much of a problem.

Dunno about ladies underwear in particular, but a wad of clothing under
the pedal would probably do the trick for long enough to get back to base.
