Garrett, you're talking about "snapshots". Lionel is talking about
"photographs".
You can do both with the same equipment. The difference is in why
you're doing it and how you use the results. Amateur photographers
are not people taking pictures of their vacation to show their friends
and family what they missed, or to reminisce with the other people who
were there. That's just... people taking pictures on their vacation.
Amateur photographers are doing a form of art, only they're not
getting any money for it. Which may distinguish them from
professionals in that they can afford better equipment because they've
got a day job. When an amateur photographer is taking photographs on
a vacation, it's because they either planned it (like a friend of mine
who makes sure to plan at least one trip per year somewhere
photogenic) or have stumbled on something they want to take photos of.
(Like the same friend of mine who's been known to divert an entire
motorcycle trip to take pictures. We usually warn newbies that this
may happen....)
You're both right, but you're really talking about different things.
And sometimes a snapshot turns out to be a photograph....
