The EMT field neuro exam is four questions: person, place, event and
time. "What's your name?" "Where are we right now?" "Who is the
president of the USA right now?" "What day of the week is it today?"
are example questions, but "What's your birthdate?" is probably a
pretty fair "event" question.
The idea, so they tell me, is that you're measuring four pretty distinct
brain functions.
One of the problems in the real field (as opposed to the field you
read about) is that sometimes you run into retirees who simply don't
keep track of the day of the week. On rare occasions, you run into
someone who gives so little of a crap about current events that he
actually can't name the president, and not because of any brain
injury.
