Good gracious, they actually had someone at an auto show who actually knew
things about the cars, instead of the usual coterie of salesweasels and
mobile distractions?
I went to the Los Angeles Auto Show when I was
shopping for a new car. At the Volvo booth, they
had a chassis engineer who actually owned the model
I was looking at. He and I were both delighted to
have someone intelligent to discuss the car with.
He told me of the joys of stoplight drag races with
smart-ass kids in their BMWs, and their dismay at
being beaten by "an old geezer in a station wagon". :-)
They had a cut-away car there to illustrate all the
safety features (crumple members, under-seat braces,
etc.). After we finished, he suggested that I go
over to the UAW booth where they had a cut-away of
the other car I was considering. My wife and I
took one look at it and both said, "Where's the
beef?", then promptly ordered the Volvo.
I'll be running it this weekend in the Cal Club SCCA
Time Trials at Fontana (California).
