With the trend to unstoppable drive-by-wire throttle and braking (and
the research paper that was pointed out in this forum last week), and
given that every other dangerous industrial machinery out there comes
with a big red button, my colleagues and I are wondering why there
isn't a big honking emergency stop switch on the dashboard of every
new car
Many years ago, I programmed the control software for grinding machines
for car crankshafts.
I'm sure I've mentioned this here before, but Giggle Groups can only
produce this posting from another froup a long, long time ago.
| The grinding wheels were about 2 metres diameter, and ground the pins
| and journals of crank shafts (~50mm). If you were foolish enough to
| hit emergency stop at the wrong time, when maximum cut was being
| taken, all power was lost to the wheel drives, the small motor that
| turned the component, and the wheel feed. The resulting gearing and
| kinetic energy cause the workpiece to spin up to some horrendous
| number of thousands of RPM, pop out of the centres, smash against the
| bottom of the machine, fragment, and fly up through the roof. One
| piece was found quarter of a mile away. A design change was made,
| adding another slideway, a hydraulic cylinder, and a large spring to
| retract the feed if the power failed.
that isolates the battery and alternator from the rest of the
electronics.
Electrically driven power steering? Hazard warning lights? Built-in GPS
so you can tell the emergency dispatcher your location?
