It's worse than that: what supplies the current for the diesel's starter
motor? (See RISKS, as always.)
Ideally, you'd have a smaller, perhaps portable, diesel generator for this
purpose. One which could be started from a hand crank or hand-crankable
flywheel.
Alternatively, have a manually crankable (by hand or bike wheel) flywheel
of sufficent dimensions and mass to provide starter power for the larger
generator.
