The US government [0] says [1] that the average fuel economy of model
year 2007 vehicles (cars, minivans, SUVs, and pickup trucks) is about
20.2 miles per gallon. That's 11.6 liters per 100 km.

That's exceeding poor, even for US gallons.

Most cars in the rest of the world average about 40 mpg(Imp), 33 mpg(US).
Newer small cars at 55mph tend to return about 50-60 mpg(Imp). Add
another 10mpg for a diesel.

On my commute, which is a mix of motorway and city driving (mean speed
32 mph according to the not very reliable car computer) I get about 46
miles per imperial gallon if I hoon it at 80 on the motorway, and
above 50 if I take life gently.

This is with a 2-litre Toyota diesel, 2001-spec so it isn't going all
that badly for a big car. The killer for me will come when Manchester
implements their forthcoming congestion charging system, which will
stick a fiver a day congestion charge onto the four-pound and change
commuting already costs me.

By then, with luck the UK will either be coming out of a house price
slump (enabling me to sell the current place and move to somewhere
inside 12 miles of the city) or will be in Socialist-induced
recession, which will likely kill the congestion charge idea stone
dead even if a change of government doesn't do so.

Either way I want to move; 60-odd miles a day is a waste of time, and
I could do with going back to some cycle commuting to belatedly lose
some weight and gain some health points.
