Reading that as a mile square (which it undoubtedly isn't), that would
save people a 1,600 metre walk, tops.

If it was a mile square then surely the upper bound for walk saved would
be just over 2275 m?

Although given what group we're in, I should probably note that's with
the also somewhat tenuous assumption that one can walk in a straight
line along the diagonal...

What, are you implying Adelaide isn't in Euclidean space?
