Pedestrians are probably the most anarchist road user group, also
the most vulnerable. Yes, drivers *hate* cyclists going through red
lights, but this is mainly, I believe, an expression of frustration
at the traffic which makes lights necessary and envy of a person who
is not being held up by it.

Why they hate lanesplitting motorcycles too. The injury stats say
lanesplitting isn't dangerous.

In the end, traffic lights exist mainly to ration the scarce
resource of road space between too many competing motor vehicles.
There are very few places where cycle or pedestrian traffic is
sufficient to require such controls.

Numbers are a problem... as Brisbane motorcyclists are finding out,
when the number of bikes is low then "park your bike in various out of
the way places" works. When there's a massive increase, suddenly
there are too many bikes to park easily and they overflow into
walkways and get in the way and the authorities crack down.

While there's only one or two bicycles at the lights, and those
fastish, then running a light's not a problem. Once there are 10 or
12 and some of them are slow or uncertain then it's nastier.

I often wonder if motorists see me wait at lights when someone else
runs them, and if so what they think. Does that ever register or is
it always "cyclists all run red lights"?
