I thought that particular excuse for a database didn't actually do
replication yet? At least... not in any sort of way that anybody anywhere
uses seriously.

Well, mine was that he shouldn't have been trying. But I suppose there's
always management.

IIRC, tweakers.net experimented extensively with replication and
eventually said "*** that ***, we'll buy servers with more and more
cores and memory and split the different sections of the site off", plus
some smart caching in the front ends. I think they're up to eight cores
and 16 or 32 gigs in each of two DB servers, now. And it's not *that* big
a site.

Several of the big ones (Livejournal, Slashdot, sort of thing) who've
publisched details of their setup do essentially the same things on a
larger scale, sometimes with one-way replication thrown in which is at
least sort of working as opposed to two-way which really isn't.
