You need to recalibrate your cynics. Use ones who own oil shares.

Does the price of oil actually make much difference to the
shareholders' bottom line? A higher selling price doesn't really help
if the raw material has become more expensive.

A properly-recalibrated cynic would be taking a lot more careful
notice of what the bunnyhuggers and their harebrained energy
generation schemes are up to.

I love the ones that do things like claim that switching to ethanol
fuels will help prevent global warming...

No kidding. I'm doing biofuels research work at the moment, and the
two keys with ethanol are (a) you can grow it, and (b) it doesn't
throw as much nasty cruft into the atmosphere with the waste carbon.
Note the lack of "less emissions".

Ethanol actually provides less mileage than the same amount of fossil
fuel; I don't know what this means on emissions, as I'm working on the
production end and not the econsumption end.

Corn-based ethanol is actually just as bad as fossil fuels in the
overall sense. It's expensive to produce, with high input energy
requirements for cultivation, and output energy relatively low
(sometimes negative) compared to the inputs. It's basically just a
ginormous corporate-and-government-funded subsidy to 'Merkin corn
farmers.
