(south side Chicago), and a french fry should be about 1/4" square, and no
less than 2" long, with the skins still on the ends. This should be cooked
in a deep fryer until it's greasy, firm, and as you put it, "bendy".

You should, of course, expect British chips to be like that because it
involves taking a perfectly good vegetable and giving it a good stout
boiling until it's soggy and has no nutritional value left.
