The problem there is that in most situations, the temperature of the
water in the machine will not equal or be above the required temperature
for washing. This is because it's not really the heat of the water that
matters so much as the heat of the water after it's mixed with all the
clothes. Unless you live in a hot climate, the clothes you're putting
into the machine are all cold. Add the heat loss from pumping and
standing in a large cold metal drum, and the resulting temperature is
just slightly warmer than ambient. So hot fill washing machines have to
heat the water up again every use unless you're running a small load or
live in a hot climate.

If you live somewhere that does have winters, and actually want to run
it full of clothes, then cold fill *is* more efficient.

People still wash clothes in warm water? Doesn't that fade the black
faster?

Black clothes, black towels, black curtains, black sheets... the only
fabric in this house that ISN'T black is dark green (throw blankets for
accent color) or are kitchen rags, which are nominally white, but are
more typically grey-brown after their rapid use, soak-in-mild-bleach,
cold-water-wash cycles.

I picked up a Magic 8-Ball the other day and it said 'Outlook not so good.'
I said 'Sure, but Microsoft still ships it.'
