Roads, standing waves, and vehicle distances

Here in .uk we have stretches of motorway that have a different

chevrons every (mumble) yards. And a sign saying 'keep at least two
chevrons between you and vehicle ahead'.

Probably should be used a bit more often, as it seems to work. Mostly.

Kind of.

I think.

Not in my experience -- there's some on the M5 south of Bristol, and I
think some on the A358 south of Taunton. I've found that
* most people ignore them completely

* most people who take notice soon go back to their normal habits

* they are spaced about 2 seconds apart at the speed limit. "Two
chevrons between you and vehicle ahead" is 4 seconds; about right for
cars in heavy rain, but OTT on a dry road (according to the Highway
Code). So they annoy the people who try to Do The Right Thing.
