On 2007-11-08, Maarten Wiltink (aka Bruce)
was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea:

One factor may be that they have a maximum of about 1.8 kW (2.5 hp)
available from the power outlet, and most seem to be designed for about
half of that. In the UK you can get about 3.8 kW (5.1 hp) out of a
standard power outlet, and in much of continental Europe you can get
about 3.0 kW (4.0 hp). I know that people from the UK often complain
about how "slow" some US appliances (like electric coffee/tea pots) are.
It's probably theoretically possible to get 16A x 230V from a new Dutch
outlet, if nothing else is connected to it.
We've been having a magnetic contacter causing us a bit of trouble, so
to make sure I knew what the techs were talking about next time it
trips, I took a look tonight. All I can say is 350Amps at 230V looks
chunky.
But between inside fuses
having been 10A for a very long time, line voltage having been 220V,
and the electric kettle usually standing next to the coffee machine, I
think that's asking for trouble. Most hairdryers and the like top out at
2000W (which is 10 _very_ fit guys on bicycles).
Pffft. 2 sprinters, or a bit over 1 Robbie McEwans.
I think I calculated my own output as about 250W for 14 minutes up the
1:20, but I was actually not unreasonably unfit then. I have to say,
it is most fun passing your boss near the final sprintpoint at about 3
times his pace when neither of you are suspecting the other party is
riding anywhere near that part of town. Oh, and he was riding with a
corporate buddy too. He assumed I had been holding that pace all the
way up the side, when in reality, I was just going for the standard
weekly sprint points prior to the coffee shop, which no one else even
attempted to contest.
I certainly couldn't hold 700W for 1 minute. That was pretty close to
vomit worthy.
