The _role_ of SSBNs precludes pack operations. SSNs are a different
matter.

I've speculated about
what the Chinese could do if they built and crewed a couple of hundred
diesel-electric boats to operate in brown water and reworked the
wolf-pack concept, possibly with some form of acoustic comms for C&C.
Current CVBG anti-sub tactics are predicted on stopping a single boat
getting a firing solution on the flat-top; how would they fare if they
were faced by ten or twenty boats moving in from all around the clock?

The cost would be horrendous. A carrier battle group is expensive, but
so is a fleet of submarines. And head to head, the submarines would be
decimated - but the carrier _would_ probably go down.

All in all, China might end up having spent a lot less money (twenty subs
at fifty million each?, for one billion versus about ten billion for the
carrier group?), having more remaining assets, and being able to
replace them faster. China might also have less problems finding crews
willing to sail, and mothers who'll let them.

Then again, it's all *typical* WW2 reasoning. America might nuke China
out of existence on the second day. Or China might simply stop buying
US bonds and never build the submarines.
