We see castle walls in books and fairy tales from early childhood on,
we read about knights and royalty and battles. This is what those
stories are about. It's very different from just reading about it: one
sees that the real wall and the real tower is very serious business,
and that real people were involved in every aspect of this. It also is
a permanent, instantaneous connection between me and those people of
500 years ago and more.

I had very similar feelings when I encountered the ruins of Holyrood
in Southampton.Hants.Uk, strangely stonehenge didn't quite get the
same reaction.

When I visited Stonehenge, I was left strangely non-plussed as well. I put
it down to the "general familiarity" aspect[1] as well as the loud and
irritating collections of US[2] tourists.

I'd love to go back sometime when the gawkers have been shooed out and it's
being used for it's traditional purpose[3] and just sit and absorb the vibe
then.

Avebury at dusk (with a bit of mist) is MUCH more impressive. Particularly
as you're not fenced out.

Yep. BTDT. No T-shirts, but lotsandlots of sheepberries. Look before
you step. I strongly recommend this good or service. Climb Silbury
Hill and watch sunrise, too.

again. And call the helldesk about their password expiring.
