Well, in .nl that won't do, the law that is going to make the Clubs
etc. smoke free in .nl has nothing to do with the customers, All
employers have to provide a smoke free working environment for their
employees, even if all the employees are smokers.
Which is a silly interpretation of the law, being pushed by the local
anti-smokers.
Not all of them. I'm a non- and anti-smoker, but I'm not _that_ stupid.
The law actually says that all employees have the *right* to a
smoke-free workplace. Nowhere does it say that an employer may not
create segregated smoking areas where all the smokers may smoke to
their hearts content.
....But I *do* object to the reasoning that if everybody who works in
a room smokes, you can let them.
Because they invariably forget about the non-smoking among the
helpdesk, and the stationery cupboard in the back of that room.
My favourite was when ballroom dance was accepted as a sport, and
competitions were made smoke-free - the floor, that is. Never the
cafetaria, which invariably had to be crossed to reach the toilets.
The law, however, does not say anything about places in the office
that are strictly not part of the workspace. Just make damned sure
it's 'strictly not', not 'not strictly'. If I have to cross it, it's
damned well strictly part of the workspace. That goes for entrances,
too.
And if they stand away from the entrance, they'll stand upwind. Why?
Ah well, since my pipe habit means I have to take at least a half hour
break to smoke anyway, I'll just go take a walk on my lunch break, or
I'll wait until I'm home.
'Wait' and 'habit' being two words not applicable to the real junkies,
the cigarette smokers.
