It's a lot easier to go over the bars when you're going seriously

True, but that just makes it more challenging to pull stoppies. Milsons Pt
steps in sydney.au are reasonably steep. I can ride *up* the bike ramp in
the middle, but it's an effort. Riding down with the back wheel off the
deck is a real challenge.
I've also had the back wheel in the air at ~60km/h when I was cut off by a
car. That was OK, except that the sideways movement to avoid the car at
the same time meant that the wheel didn't quite come down square. That
just meant there was a bit of a kick when it came down.
The basic trick is to develop the reflex to hold off the bars as soon as
you brake, and to be comfortable enough with the back wheel coming up not
to panic clutch the lever more. There generally isn't time for conscious
control of emergency braking, but with practice you can train a reflex [1]
that lets you do all this.
[1] Technically this wouldn't be a reflex since presumably there's brain
control. However, it's lower leve/l than conscious control. Is there a term
for this, or does "reflex" get overloaded to include this? I think I've
heard "conditioned reflex" which would indicate the latter. Any one else
got input on this little tangent?
