Shimano Flight Deck pushbike computers do almost exactly that, except
they're also the rpm and speed display units to start with so the sensors
don't even go to two places.
Except completely the other way round. It's got input from the gear
shifters that tell it which gear it's in, and a speedo sensor, and then it
derives rpm from there.
