That is, living in the middle of nowhere will be "subsidized" by those
people who buy the products produced there. That makes more sense, I
think.

Except that there would have to be a really massive increase in those
prices and salaries before the unrational actors that people are would
consider it to weigh in against cost of $stuff, much more than the actual
difference in cost of living.

Or perhaps the other way around: some people want to live far away
from many people, so the required increase in income would be less.
