The contemporary reviews
asked why they bothered considering the 4LS drum on the previous model
was a very good example of the drum brake breed.
The 4LS drum brake on the Thruxton version of my old bike was reckoned
to be a very decent bit of kit, but adjusting it was like setting the
tappets on a Ducati five-valve head, only you had to do it more often as
the pads never wore evenly. My 350 Viper only has the OEM 2LS
cable-operated drum but it never goes fast enough for that to be much of
a problem.
THe brit drums tended to be more flimsy than the Italian ones. So
they seemed to go out of round more easily.
Guzzi 4LS hubs are very solid heavy objects, and I found that once
properly adjusted and if maintained (that is grease the cables and
nipples and check the adjustment regularly) they work well.
Getting them set up is time consuming though!
I have been impressed at how well that brake could scrub off speed
when I topped a crest at 150kmh on a 260kg bike to find a flock of
sheep on the other side...
