Another instance that I considered as an example was one of the cells
used by the Ethyl Corporation, way back when our class visited the
plant, for electrolytic production of Na through reduction of NaCl or
some such. Cables thick as my thigh, carrying 25 to 50 kiloamps, into
each of hundreds of electrolysis cells. No wonder they had us take off
our watches.
Daaamn. Mike gets to go on all the GOOD field trips...
I'd have been ... 11 or 12 at the time, which would put that back in
1958 or 1959. It was a super-neat trip, but I didn't then have the BG to
appreciate it as much as I would now. Still, it was _most_ interesting
as field trips go: a deep, heavy _HUMMMMMMMmmm_ from the rectifier banks
in the building, a slight whiff of Cl, and the knowledge that Something
Very Fundamental was happening in those pots whose lids were just above
the floor level, with the huge cables leading down into them. Salt in,
a greenish gas and a shiny silver metal out.
Nowadays, of course, any _hint_ that the kids might even get to think
about being near that much energy, or molten chlorides at ~600C, or
gaseous CL or elemental Na would be grounds for nixing the whole idea of
field trips _anywhere_.
I hear that kids in the Toronto-area schools do field trips to "Canada's
Wonderland", an amusement park N. of T-town on the 400, instead of real,
educational field trips to Science North or the Ontario Science Center.
*sigh*
