Erm, how can anything be less work than removing one resistor?

If you need (for example) 10 blinkenlights, a 555 + a 4017 is both
cheaper & easier to wire up than 10 555's & their associated discrete
components. And the greater the number of blinkenlights you require,
the greater the savings in total parts-count.
