... but I'd expect the various
tarsands projects to be well under way by that time since their
breakeven is around 45-55 bucks a barrel (less if they use
nuclear-powered steam generators to boil the oil out of the sand).
One wonders why they can't just burn some of the tarsands-output oil to
separate more of it,
Current state-of-the-art is four barrels of oil burned to get one
barrel of oil ready to ship, as I understand it. That's the reason for
the 45-55 buck a barrel breakeven. There's also a shitload of water
needed for process steam and absent some miracle boiler tech that's got
to be clean water to start with. I think the last version of the tech I
heard about used about a tonne of water per barrel of oil generated, or
five tonnes per barrel shipped. The downstream is going to be foul, as
bad as Pennsylvania surface water a hundred years ago.
[0] A Uni I worked at back in the 80s once got four new minicomputers
straight off the production line, serial numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5. What
Fun!
Did you ever ask what happened to number 4?
I think it fell of the back of the delivery truck, just like the disk
drive that accompanied it. Getting the old ICL dinosaurs out of the
sixth floor room they were in with only a small passenger lift took a
serious crane operation. My suggestion of enlisting Mister Gravity Well
was not appreciated even after I pointed out helpful he had been wrt the
disk drive.
