My in-laws live near to a Country Park and their garden (and woodland)
has become home to an escaped peacock. He's been living there for a
number of years now; my father-in-law refers to him as "the Captain".

My mother-in-law has Siamese. Who generally don't go out much. However,
one bright summers day, my mother-in-law decided to let the cats out to
play. Without checking to see if the Captain was about.

Youngest Siamese, who has a (justified) reputation for being even more
brain-dead than the rest of the species, goes trotting across the lawn
and suddenly stops dead. He's spotted the peacock. Mother-in-law works
this out, just as the Siamese decides that this big lunch-on-legs *will*
be his!

Apparently he pounced the Captain (who had been looking the other way)
and managed to get on the birds back. At which point the bird took off. I
don't mean ran, I mean went airborne.

Apparently he got a good 3 feet off the ground before the cat realised
what was happening and let go. He hasn't shown any interest in the
Captain since. This is used by my mother-in-law as evidence that the
cat *can* learn. I use it as evidence that he's probably only got about
3 lives left.
