Long time ago, at a workplace that doesn't exist anymore...
The word came down from On High that we had to wear our ID badges.
We thought this was silly - there were few enough of us that we knew
each other by sight, yea even the shift-working operators.
So we ignored it. At least the peons did, some of the management types
thought they should do it.
So again the word came from On High, and much noise was made. So
we-the-peons threw our badges onto a table and picked a new one. I was
a 6ft tall bearded Egyptian called Ahmed for a while.
Eventually someone noticed. (Or a manager narked, not sure which.) And
word came down from On High that people must not only wear badges, but
wear their own badges.
So everyone did. Usually inside pockets, although the back of the
collar, inside trouser cuffs, and under a hat were popular locations.
Eventually On High (who was a Yank and new, and had not been
acclimatised to how things were done in the Antipodes) admitted defeat,
and no more was heard of wearing badges.
