We've been through the same exercise. The manglement were, it seemed,
far happier paying £money to a company to which they could complain
and, usually, be ignored - than to get free software which they could
complain about and be ignored.
We, on the other hand, preferred software to which we could get the
source code and, if necessary, fix for ourselves. But life hasn't
been like that "for pay" since IBM's VM/CMS, over a decade back. So
we have to leave the manglement to pay good money for the campus
licence for the software we don't use, while we zero-budgetly quietly
install the free, open source, competitor. Just hope manglement don't
read this group.
Did I mention our Windows OS users who asked us to install OpenOffice
on their windows system, so that they didn't have to put up with the
already-licensed-and-installed Office suite from their OS vendor?
Smart users, some of them.
