Argh - don't remind me.
Sunday morning, working on a box, need a dvd drive for it. No biggie - its not
even afternoon yet, at least some stores are going to be open. One quick visit
to an electrical boxshifter sees me in posession of a nice shiny DVD/CD-RW combo
drive (for only twice the normal price), complete with silly little audio link
cable - but no IDE cable. Of *course* the box in front of me has a single port
IDE cable, and I don't have any spares on hand.
So, back to boxshifter.
I could easily buy an audio cable - after all, they must pride themselves on
their wide range of gas-reduced, gold plated, specially stranded, glow in the
dark, make a cup of coffee... well, never mind. they had an entire WALL of audio
and video cables, but despite four isles of computer kit, do they stock IDE
cables? no.
"Oh, we don't stock those, everything you need comes in the box"
"this box" <shows box and receipt> "doesn't"
"oh. maybe that box is faulty, I will open another and check"
<salesdroid checks another box>
"you must not need those normally then - because it says right on the box
everything you need is included"
"and how do you plan to connect it to the computer without the cable?"
<FX: salesdroid holds up silly audio connector thing>
"there is a cable in here, see?"
Anyhow, one refund later, I wait until a real computer shop opens the next
day, and buy an almost identical drive (plus TWO cables) to find - it came with
a cable. still, a spare spare cable never comes in wrong...

In practical terms, it cost them a sale, and in future I am less likely to visit
or recommend that particuar boxshifter (unless for audio cables, which I am sure
they can do competently, if in an overpriced manner)
