Many Americans believe that the lion's share of their Federal taxes
goes to foreign aid, more even than Social Security, the military budget
or Medicaid/Medicare. When presented with the truth, that US government
spending on foreign aid is miniscule compared to most other First World
countries they often drag out "private donations" as a distraction
forgetting private citizens in other First World countries also make
large charitable donations to foreign aid operations.

Can anyone actually name a large non-governmental international aid
organisation that is US-based? The "X Sans Frontiers" groups are French
or Canadian, Oxfam and Christian Aid are British. The ICRC is worldwide.
Right now I can't think of any US equivalents.
