You only need to go far enough in to kill them. If your point comes a
foot out the other side, you have wasted energy, and that force into
bone will damage the sword.
Besides - one thrust seldom if ever kills instantly, so while you are
trying to pull it out they might get you as they are dying.
If you want to get rid of frustration, use a cutting weapon....
