Then there's the intermediate, that needs a soldering iron for the signal
pin but screws on the shield.

BNC was, and still is, used for connections between frequency generators,
Devices Under Test, and oscilloscopes. Admittedly that's usually the good
BNC, but if the connector itself was a crappy design they'd surely have
moved on now.
