Re: Turned Computer During Error Checking

Trying the thumb drive again. I know it's a working drive. I chose the option during Ubuntu install to reformat the drive. Started the ailing desktop and this time chose F12 to make sure the computer saw the usb device as the first bootable drive. It's listed as such, however, when I hit Enter with the usb device selected, I get two beeps and this message, "selected boot device not available and then the options to strike F1, F2 or F5 for various options. I know both of the usb ports I put the thumb drive in are in working order. The drive it's self was in working order before I removed everything from it, reformatted in FAT32 and installed Ubuntu for USB on it.

As a test, I made my laptop's bootable drive the usb option and tried it. I got the ubuntu "I'm working on it" screen and then all hell broke loose :o Scrolling numbers that went up and down, side to side and diagonally, which resulted in this screen. The most success I've gotten so far is putting the usb version of the OS on a cd and booting from that! <lol> At least I got to "do you want to run this from the cd or install" screen.
I'm sorry this is taking so long to resolve. I Googling and working with Ubuntu user forums too.

I made USB my boot drive and rebooted my XP SP3 machine with the Ubuntu
11.04 desktop on the usb stick. I did nothing to any of the files once they
were on the drive (didn't find any information that said I was supposed to
do anything once the program was installed onto the thumb drive according to
the directions on the Ubuntu website for installing on a usb drive).
Booted my XP machine and it went straight to the sorry for the
inconvenience, would you like to try one of these safe modes, last known
good configuration or start windows normally page. Shouldn't it have least
seen the usb boot drive? Here is a screen shot of the files on my usb drive

Started the Ubuntu download in case the BootIt program doesn't work for
me and saw that it's nearly 700mb. I'll have to wait till my "free"
download time (1-6am). HughesNet puts a cap on downloads and that's
double my allotted download.
you don't need Ubuntu which contains alot of extra crap that you won't
need. I use Puppy Linux or you could d/l Damn Small LInux which is about
50mb and get access to the files on your HD.
