I always set up single partition systems, never seeing enough advantage to do otherwise.that is by and large that is exclusively a windows 'feature.'The OP has a misbehaving Seagate drive in his computer right now, hardly anything one can depend upon.Good point! I missed that.I have mixed opinions about whether to set up the drive as a single or as multiple partitions. It is easier to manage one single lump of disk storage on a single partition. But segregating ALL data from program installations can make backup chores easier, and cut down on the need to defrag the partition holding the OS... Ben MyersUnfortunately, Windows doesn't allow total segregation. Even if you specify
the data drive during install, Windows (possibly OS X and Linux too, I don't know)
still installs related files on the system drive.

i find multiple partitions on a single drive for a single user to be completely worthless. the only thing they do vs using folders is make it confusing for someone else to try to recover data from a defective drive and the limit imposed on the primary partition where the operating system is installed can become a hassle when you run low on space. keep it as a single partition to keep it simple.
Maintenance and repair of multi-partition systems is not always fun, either.
But my main system here has an all-data second drive. There is data on its boot drive, of course... Ben Myers
i like the idea of a all-data drive but there always seems to be little things left behind. for instance if you use outlook express then the windows address book is stored in a sub folder of your user profile even if you changed the default location for the outlook express store folder. and if you use outlook 2003/2007 then your recently typed address list (nkg file) is lurking somewhere deep in your user profile even if you have relocated the pst file... and more often than not people that do move the pst file forget to redirect the location for outlook to create the archive leaving the data set spilt between two different locations. though there are registry hacks to allow one to relocate these things it unfortunately isn't possible to confidently be on top of it or restore your system with all the same setting that is had should one need to rebuild after a failure. trying to fight the 'standards' of the operating system and applications just isn't worth the work, and ultimately you will probably loose the fight...
Standards? No Microsoft's pigheadedness in burying the Outlook and Outlook Express deep down where the sun does not shine. Seems like anything they can do to make life more difficult for IT types and service providers.
I cannot imagine how many times the questions have been asked on the internet: "How can I find my Outlook mail file(s)?" or Where is my Outlook Express address book???" ... Ben Myers
