XPS 630i
Just picked up another 1.5TB SATA drive. Installed it using the last
data connector and stealing the power connector from an extra
DVD burner. System doesn't see the drive.
First, as Christopher pointed out, make sure the drive is turned on in
the BIOS setup utility. It used to be that Dell systems would show the
new hard drive when the operating system had started up, but that it
would only work in PIO mode.
I know knothing about RAID and I suspect this may be
the problem. Anyone have a clue what I need to do?
If you don't know anything about RAID on this system, I doubt that it
is set up.
If it is, you'll need to add the drive to a "logical container" (or
similarly named object) with something like the Intel Matrix Storage
Manager.
Also, is there some kind of splitter made that I can attach to an
existing power cable to split it into 2?
Yes, such things do exist. I haven't seen any that do this with a SATA
power connector, but I have seen many that take the conventional four
pin Molex connector to two or more SATA connectors. You should be able
to get one for a few bucks at any decently stocked computer store. Or
they might even give you one if you ask nicely. Every few months, I
get a big bag of screws and *boxes* of various cables from one that I
frequent. They give the stuff to me instead of throwing it away.

Thanks William. Looks like RAID is set up on this...at least BIOS shows the RAID array, but I still haven't a clue how to work with it.

your machine supports a raid configuration of the hard disk, but that does not mean it is in use.
if you did not request a raid configuration when you purchased the machine then raid is not in use.
drives marked as raid enabled does not mean that they are configured for use as a raid group.

ps. you should have enough power conectors for all the drives that the system has a bay for. look under technical overview for a detailed image of the power supply and all of its power conenctors.
