Re: How to swap hard drive to a larger one on an Inspiron 630m

a simple search on ebay for "630m caddy" will yeild many sellers offering a
seconday hard drive caddy for the optical bay in the 630m that comes in a
versions that support either a pata or sata hard disk drive.

I don't believe this is correct. I think you may be thinking of the 600m.

i just remembered that the inspiron 630m supports the installation of a
second hard drive installed in a special caddy that is fitted into the
media bay (where the optical drive, the cd/dvd drive usually resides).
the hard disk caddy is available with either sata or pata interfaces (one
or the other, not both). so you could introduce an additional hard disk
space to this system without the need to clone anything if you are willing
to give up the optical drive.

pps. you can have your friend install www.logmein.com for free on her
computer so that you can download/run the disk cloning software. all
she will have to do is install the new bare drive in the enclosure and
connect it to her usb port, then let you logon via logmein so you can
download/install and run the disk utilities, then the system will reboot
and clone the drive, and finally she will have to swap the drives
herself. good luck.

ps, if you don't have a copy of arcronis then don't buy one. the free
disk utilities from the hard disk manufactures like westerndigital or
seagate (available for download from the respective sights) work just
fine at cloning your drive with the fore mentioned caveat.

i have no idea why the person above gave you a link to an overpriced
hard disk on dell.com for a latitude d630 when you asked about an
inspiron 630m. the drive refered to in that link will not work in the
inspiron 630m, the description in the listing refers to a different
model computer (latitude d630), the drive is the same size as the one
you are looking to replace, and it is way overpriced.
assuming you are asking about an inspiron 630m - what you will need is
a 2.5" pata type drive.
after all the confusing replies you got here you may want to check
what is currently in the machine and there are two very easy ways to
do that:
1) look in device manager under disk drives to see the exact model
number of the drive that you have. then look up this model number at
the manufactures site (or post the model number here is you are not
sure how to look it up).
2) visit support.dell.com and check the warranty status of your
machine by entering the system tag number. when on the warranty
status page look at the top of the listing for a tab that shows the
original system configuration as the machine was shipped. in the
original configuration note the dell part number for the hard disk
that was shipped with the system and report it here.
but as i said, you need a sata drive and i suggest this one as the
current best value.
250gb western digital with ? warranty for $81 delivered (and note that
there is a user review that confirms this drives compaibility with
dell xps m140*)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136159
all you save is $10 to go with the second best value...
160gb seagate with three year warranty for $71 delivered
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148073
you may also want to purchase an external usb pata type hard disk
exclosure if you want to clone the image of the current drive to new
drive before you put the new drive inside of the laptop - this would
mean that you would not have to reinstall windows, however you may
need to reinstall some application software (microsoft office 2003/7
comes to mind as it does not clone correctly).
before you pull the drive from the system, disconenct the a/c power
cord, remove the pbattery, and then hold the power button for 10
seconds to discharge any residual power from the system. then follow
the step by step graphical hard disk removal instructions found under
'hard disk' in the dell service manual found here:
*note that the inspiron 630m is also known as an xps 140m so don't let
that throw you.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps140M/en/sm/index.htm
and finally, should you want to see exactly what each side
(top/bottom, inside and out) of the laptop looks like then have a look
at the user manual found here:

I have promised a friend living in another town to help her installing
a larger hard drive on her Inspiron 630m.
She has only 80GB.

First question is: is it SATA or IDE ?
I spent ½ hour on support.dell.com without being able to find an
answer .

She cannot either find this info in the device manager.

Second question: is this the right way to do it:
1- mount the new unformatted drive in an external USB-enclosure
2- Run a cloning from old to new drive with Acronis true-image 9. I
expect this might take 2 or more hours.
3- mount the new drive in the 630m
