a utility called newsid will apply a new random sid to all files on a cloned
disk and even assign a new computer name if desired.
this utility is available for free from microsoft who purchased the company
named winternals/systernals who originally published it. but that is really
only a potential issue in an environment with a windows domain server, not
an issue for home user or small networks.
i have experienced issued with office after cloning with both seagate and
westerndigital free cloning tools done either in dos or windows. the
solution was to use the microsoft windows installer cleanup tool to
completely remove office and then reinstall from scratch which is not a big
deal if you are a legitimate owner of the software. perhaps other cloning
tools are able to successfully clone office along with the rest of windows.
neither of you guys mentioned what you used to clone your drive which
apparently worked fine for you.

I also have not had any problems at all cloning hard drives with anything
on them.
I probably do one every week or so.
The only possible issue is if the drive is not replacing the original is
to make sure you change the SID on the new drive if you plan on running
both drives live.

, however you may need to reinstall some application software (microsoft
office 2003/7 comes to mind as it does not clone correctly).
Christopher,
Do you have more information on this issue? I have Office 2003 and 2007.
I frequently restore OS images and have had no issues. I haven't "cloned"
my HD but theoretically it should give the same result as the clone
should be identical to the source HD. Have you had problems with cloning
HDs containing Office? In another forum a member reported a few Office
apps not working properly after a clone. It jogged my memory when I saw
your post.
