Easiest way to diagnose further is to boot up the computer, go into the BIOS setup, cursor down to the battery info, and see what happens when you GENTLY jiggle the power adapter's connector. The battery screen will either continue to show "charging" or switch to "discharging". Or not. Also, if the screen controls are set to lower brightness on battery, the screen will dim. Or not.
My daughter's E1405 just got one error message about her dell laptopAs I read more, it seems more likely the power adapter is failing but
not recognizing the power adapter? Thinking it might be the power
adapter, we used my power adapter (from my E1405) on her laptop and it
booted up without an error. Next, she went back to use her own power
adapter, booted it up and all went well without any error then.
Shortly thereafter, she checked the power option properties (XP) and
it recognized her power adapter. So it appears she has only gotten
this error once beginning tonite so I guess it will have to happen
again inorder to diagnose correctly.
What do you think might cause this error, the power jack in her
laptop? Can I just re-solder the old power jack or where do I get a
new one? And what type solder gun and solder do I use for this job?
I've taken some of the laptop apart so that doesn't bother me but is
it hard to get to the power jack if I should want to re-solder it?
hasn't failed yet?? Am I on the right track... first power adapter
then power jack?
Personally, I do not favor soldering a new power adapter, because it is an operation that requires very exacting work. But others think soldering power jacks is OK... Ben Myers
Ben, I'm using the possible bad ac adapter on "my" laptop (the error
message showed up originally on my daughter's laptop ...both laptops =
E1405). What I observed so far is that when I jiggle the jack and
observe the battery info within the BIOS, it does NOT change the
setting from electric to battery. And I did NOT notice any change
in the screen brightness when I dimmed it prior.
Does this mean it's likely the ac adapter going bad? So far in 3 or
so reboots, no error message on my laptop and talking to my daughter
who is using my old ac adapter, she hasn't gotten any error message
either. I'm hoping if she doesn't get one and I do, then we
definitely narrowed it down to her bad ac adapter. I went ahead and
bought 2 new Dell ac adapters (not from dell) to have around just in
case since I have 3 laptops which use the same ac adapter.
Thanks again Ben for the help.
The screen will become dimmer when the A/C adapter is unplugged only if the BIOS has two brightness settings (one for A/C, one for battery), and the battery setting is less bright than the A/C setting. Check your BIOS settings! Running with the screen at a lower level of brightness prolongs the time the system will run on battery... Ben Myers
